The Arkansas Correctional School:

  • Provides educational services to approximately 4,500 inmates each day. 
  • Provides educational services at a cost of $1,510 per student per year (based on 2001-02 figures). This compares to $6,168 for public school expenditure per student (based on 2002-03 figures).
  • Has averaged 775 GED graduates per year for the past seven years.
  • Has organized school programs at fourteen units of the Department of Correction, five units of the Department of Community Correction, and two probation and parole offices.
  • Has been unanimously ruled a public school by the Arkansas Supreme Court (12/21/95).
  • Provides an opportunity for the completion of an education for those who did not attain a high school diploma.
  • Has 82 licensed teachers and seven (7) classified employees.
  • Is committed to the goal of reducing recidivism and improving quality of life by providing educational opportunities for all inmates.
